Raise your hand if you live to work. Anyone? I’m betting most of you are like me and subscribe to the ideology of working to live. As a senior developer relations engineer at Intuit, I can prioritize my tasks so that I can spend valuable time with my family and enjoy my personal pursuits, including adventure sports on land, air, or water!
If you’re in the middle of comparing new developer jobs, then I can tell you that having this work/life flexibility is just one of the many benefits of working at Intuit.
Why do I love being an Intuit developer?
Intuit recently ranked #11 on Fortune’s 100 best companies to work for and was recognized as Fast Company’s 50 Best Workplaces for Innovators. A core Intuit value is “Win Together,” which is all about teams working together toward our mission of powering prosperity around the world.
I’ve found this to be true in my time at Intuit, a company that truly cares about its employees and their benefits, while also encouraging us to give back to the community. Intuit has also helped me grow both personally and professionally, giving me a platform to do challenging tasks every day.
Speaking of which, let me give you a look at my typical day.
It starts with helping developers in fixing their issues or providing answers to their questions if they are stuck at any point in their QuickBooks Online (QBO) or QuickBooks Payments development activities. I interact with different teams to see if there are ways we can improve our efforts to help QBO users, fix any bugs, or create new features. Although we have great documentation to mentor developers, I try to help if there are any gaps.
I also work on improving the existing libraries and creating new samples. My schedule is flexible, which complements the Agile methodology we follow, putting people over processes and allowing us to respond to change rather than following a rigid plan. As a team, we have a lot of discussions about outcomes and the pros/cons of projects – then, we work on them. This is a great example of our Win Together mentality.
The challenge, of course, is working with different teams and identifying which team owns which project. My team has helped make the process much easier by selecting the best contact from each functional team, and Intuit has helped by providing managers and peers to help unblock issues at any point.
Why would you want to work at Intuit?
In addition to the flexibility, the invigorating daily challenges, and getting to work with other like-minded, passionate developers, Intuit provides Global Engineering days once every year. These days encourage us to try something that can be used within a specific project or across Intuit. We’re also provided internal/external resources and training, and are encouraged to attend industry talks to see how the industry is growing.
Just as importantly, my team and I have the freedom to unwind in ways that work for us:
- We go for walks together or play Ping-Pong. We celebrate birthdays, which brings other teams together.
- We’re also part of the IDG culture club where we take part in multiple events. As part of the IDG culture club, we do space optimizations where we renovate our work environment to make it more comfortable and conducive to collaboration.
- We have a Cheers for Peers program where members of the team cheer their co-workers in a public forum instead of just saying “Thank You” to them.
- As a team, we volunteer in “We Care We Give Back” programs, such as cleaning up a park or school, packing food, or assisting with the local Secret Santa organization.
